You'll definitely want a patch of this annual, native plant in your garden; its soft, woolly white to pale pink flowers look just like rabbit's feet. It blooms at 5-30 cm, and underground, an active root system extends up to 50 cm. The root nodules, in cooperation with rhizobium bacteria, store valuable nitrogen from the air as a buffer, which also benefits other plants. Let this plant happily grow as fertilizer among your vegetables or ornamental plants!
To avoid depleting your valuable soil, it's wise to occasionally leave the land fallow. During such a period, green manure is ideal: it adds nutrients to the soil through often present nitrogen fixation; it suppresses weed growth, promotes bacterial life, provides humus, and in some cases, works against harmful nematodes.
