The plant resembles red clover, but the flowers are softly toned: greenish-white in color, and the leaves are elongated blue-green without spots. This legume is capable of fixing nitrogen from the air and storing it in its roots. When mown and tilled, this nitrogen becomes available to other plants. Egyptian clover tolerates wetter soil well and is very good at suppressing weeds. In winter, this annual plant is guaranteed to die off, so no nuisance...!
To avoid depleting your valuable soil, it is wise to occasionally leave the ground fallow. During such a period, green manure is ideal: it adds nutrients to the soil through often present nitrogen fixation; it suppresses weed growth, promotes bacterial life, provides humus, and in some cases works against harmful nematodes.
