Sainfoin 'Lordo' / 'Taja'
- Product number: 390600.1
- Origin: Not applicable / Not known
- Latin: Onobrychis viciifolia
Perennial legume (thus fixes nitrogen from the air) with beautiful flowers: white with red stripes. The stems (80 cm high) are sturdy and the flowers are useful for bees and many other insects. It is notable that Sainfoin, as fodder for livestock (such as sheep), shows a significant reduction in worm infections, see the PDF.
To avoid depleting your valuable soil, it is wise to let the land lie fallow occasionally. During such a period, green manure is ideal: it introduces nutrients into the soil through often present nitrogen fixation; it suppresses weed growth, promotes bacterial life, provides humus, and in some cases, works against harmful nematodes.
