Beautiful, sturdy plants 1.5-2 m high, with bright green leaves and dark stems, against which the light seeds stand out beautifully. This grain, unknown to many, has been known in Africa (Sahel) and India since time immemorial. It grows even in the driest areas and provides the impoverished population there with traditional grain, porridge, spirits and couscous. The stems and leaves are used as building material. In modern agriculture, this millet is still widely used as highly nutritious animal feed. As a rotation crop for soybeans and potatoes, this crop is essential: it suppresses weeds and nematodes. Pearl millet is also widely mixed into birdseed. In short: beauty and utility meet again! Fun culinary tip: roasted in oil, the seeds pop into delicious popcorn!
