This lover of damp places blooms from June to September: its sturdy 1-meter high stems have toothed leaves with a cluster of small white labiate flowers at each leaf attachment. It is a dye plant (black dye) that makes other dyes deeper and darker. Its regulating effect on the thyroid (and thus heart rhythm) has long been used to make medicinal tea for those with a fast metabolism. Perennial.
We sometimes supply the very similar cultivar exaltatus.
