We all know rooibos tea, right? It's exciting to be able to sow this shrub. It somewhat resembles our familiar broom, but it originates from South Africa. It can tolerate a little frost, but it's best to move the plant into a greenhouse or shed in time if the first frost is predicted. The tea is made from the fermented leaves and is less bitter than Chinese tea due to its lower tannin content. The tea is caffeine-free and contains fluoride, which offers natural protection against tooth decay. The medicinal properties of rooibos tea were already discovered and used by the Bushmen and Hottentots.
Give the plant a sunny spot and very well-drained, slightly acidic soil; do not keep it wet, so move it under a canopy or into a greenhouse during continuous rain.
