A beautiful garden plant, which is still found in the Netherlands and Belgium (albeit rarely). The plants like moist, peaty soil and do very well in a pot or in a semi-shaded spot. The yellow and wine-red flower (V-VI) hangs downwards and is almost entirely enclosed by wine-red calyxes. Slender, burr-shaped, brownish-red fruits soon develop from these. The plant's name (Nagelkruid) comes from the clove-like scent of its roots. The roots were formerly used as a painkiller for toothache and as a medicine for stomach and intestinal complaints.
