It's amazing how useful such a common plant can be...! A true flavor and natural sweetener in tea (dried leaf), soup (young leaf), liqueur and stewed fruits (flowers), chilled drinks, etc. Black dye is extracted from the root, and yellow dye from the plant tops. An important oil is made from the flower buds for the perfume industry, and the dried plant parts spread a wonderful aroma in the room that lasts a long time.

Meadowsweet has a very long medicinal history: it was one of the three most sacred herbs of the Druids. The leaves and flower stalks are, among other things, anti-inflammatory, stomach-protective and intestinal-restoring. A decoction of the boiled root is said to be effective, when used externally, in the treatment of wounds and ulcers. In homeopathy, the fresh root is diluted to treat coughs, bronchitis and fever.

The leaf resembles a rose leaf (they are related), and the small cream-white flowers grow in large quantities, forming large plumes. These substantial plants (up to 2 m high!) love a lot of moisture, making them ideal for watersides and other wet places. Butterflies will be grateful visitors!
