This member of the bedstraw family is, of course, best known for the red dye (alizarin) extracted from its roots: Turkey Red or Madder lake. In the past, they were widely cultivated in Zeeland for this purpose, and since then, they can occasionally be found in hedges and roadsides. The perennial plant 'works' its way up through other plants using the backward-pointing prickles on its stems. The flowering is abundant but not striking: greenish-yellow branched clusters. Since 2004, a company in Steenbergen has been active with Madder again. After extensive study on the extraction of this beautiful dye, the company Rubia Pigment Naturalia was founded: www.rubia-nc.com
