This relative of the well-known houseplant Ardisia crenata grows in forested areas in Central America and is a popular plant there due to its effectiveness against diarrhea, dysentery, and coughs. Both the berries and the leaves (in tea) are used for this purpose. The plant forms sturdy, leathery leaves and, after white flowering, produces large clusters of berries, which ripen from red to almost black.
This tropical plant can be moved outdoors in summer and is primarily grown as a houseplant.
