A rare, strong shrub to small tree from North to Central China. After 10 years, the slender shrub is 2.5m tall. After the greenish-yellow to white bloom in June, red fruits that ripen to black appear. These are a spicy seasoning, stronger and hotter than black pepper. The whole fruits can be cooked along, after drying (possibly roasting) and grinding, a very strong table pepper is created. Furthermore, many medicinal applications are known for this plant, especially in the field of intestinal disorders and fluid drainage. The roots are even used after a poisonous snakebite! The plants are monoecious and self-pollinating, so 1 plant is enough to harvest peppercorns. Give the plants a shady, moist, but well-drained place. The plant has thorns, which later grow into decorative knobs on the bark! Finally: the plant can be grown into a decorative bonsai! The name: Native Americans chewed on the bark and berries to relieve toothache.
