A tropical-looking plant with fleshy stems and large, lance-shaped leaves. The flowers are in long clusters, changing color from green to white. After flowering, black berries appear, which (unlike many other pokeweeds) remain upright. They are used to color wine, confectionery, and also clothing. The young leaves are a delicacy (Poke Salad). Caution: older leaves, roots, and berries are poisonous. Height 1-2 m, also grows in shady spots and likes plenty of nutrients and moisture.
