Everything on this plant from the USA is edible, but it is best known for the indigo dye found in its deep blue flowers. Like lavender, this plant eventually develops a woody base, which is continually rejuvenated by pruning (in spring). The whitish-grey stems and finely feathered leaves already provide immense ornamental value. At the top, this 1m tall plant blooms with clusters of elongated flower spikes in a deep blue colour with a greyish-woolly base and a herbaceous scent! It is very winter hardy; give it a not too moist, but sunny spot. Over the years, the plant becomes hairier and greyer. In the wild, the plant easily survives a fire due to its deep root system.
