A light, profusely flowering, robust plant 30-80 cm high (depending on moisture supply) with sky-blue trumpet-shaped flowers. The spherical fruits are characteristic, from which the plant derives its species name "inflata" (= inflated or swollen). In addition to its ornamental value, the name also reveals its history as tobacco; smoking is said to be a euphoric experience that Native Americans eagerly sought (and still seek?). Modern smokers use this tobacco as a quit-smoking aid to get rid of nicotine, as lobeline is apparently less addictive. Small amounts as tea are beneficial for the nervous system, respiratory tract, and throat. Experiments are currently being conducted with lobeline as a growth inhibitor for cancer cells. Please note: an overdose is dangerous, and experiments are at your own risk!
