Beautiful, exotic-looking plant with large, upward-facing, pale blue-violet calyx flowers with a darker center. The stems are dark violet, and pollinated flowers develop into large spiny fruits, somewhat resembling chestnut burrs. After these fruits burst open, you can dry them. For optimal growth, the plant requires a lot of nitrogen. When used expertly, it is a powerful medicinal herb, but beware! Amateurism is deadly; the plant is poisonous.
