The Bodhi tree is native to India and Sri Lanka and is the most important tree in Buddhism. It is considered a sacred tree because Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, attained bodhi (= enlightenment) under a Bodhi tree. Within Hinduism, many specimens of this Ficus are also recognised as sacred, but that is up to the local priest... The strikingly shaped leaves have a "drip tip", which is believed to ensure the rapid drainage of rainwater. The plant can be placed outdoors in summer and is otherwise a fascinating houseplant that you won't often find in the usual houseplant selection! For decorative purposes, the leaves are stripped of their chlorophyll and then dried, resulting in a beautiful skeleton! Of course, many medicinal properties are attributed to such a sacred tree; information about this can be found on the internet.
