From a distance, flowering calamint gives the impression of real thyme: soft lilac and a hum of bees and bumblebees! Up close, the fresh minty scent is noticeable and unrivalled: a hint of thyme and camphor are clearly discernible! The leaves somewhat resemble oregano (in shape), and the thousands of labiate flowers can continue to bloom well into autumn if the spent plant is pruned back immediately. The taste is spicy and minty; both leaves and flowers are edible in salads, meat and fish dishes, potatoes, herb butter, etc. Give the plants a sunny spot, good drainage, and some protection in winter.
