This prostrate, highly branched dwarf shrub does not grow taller than 15 cm. The delicate, white, urn-shaped flowers have a playful red tip (pouting mouth). After flowering, small red berries appear, containing arbutin, tannins, and flavone glycosides, which are medicinal for bladder infections. The plant germinates slowly and prefers dry, sandy locations. The dried leaf, together with alum, yields a good blue dye.
