Beautiful regional name for a sturdy summer carrot with a bright yellow colour. Usually, the roots remain short and blunt; on very light soils, a somewhat longer carrot develops. Very good taste! This variety came into our possession via Ruurd Walrecht.
He writes: "Oh yes, I came across 'Gele Mollenstaart' on your beautiful site. This originally came from Joordens. They still had seeds in the freezer from their old selection variety 'Blariacus'. Because not much selection was done later, the variety reverted to the landrace, so 'Limburgse Gele' or also 'Gele Mollenstaart'. That's why I used that name. I don't know what the name refers to, and nobody could tell me at the time. I still grow it here in Sweden. Perhaps interesting to know: Mollenstaart were sown broadcast over the barley field about a week after the barley was sown. The early sowing was no problem. After that, growth slowed down somewhat among the barley, and after the barley harvest, which is an early crop, Chilean saltpetre and the harrow were applied. Before winter, there were carrots for livestock and humans. The Mollenstaart were stored in clamps for winter consumption."
