A breakthrough in carrot selection: combining excellent flavor and good resistance to carrot rust fly (which tunnels into your carrots). This increases your yield and saves on any chemical pest control applied! A type for light and heavier soils. In areas where carrot rust fly is prevalent, we recommend sowing a row of regular carrots next to this variety to lure the flies away.
It is true that carrot rust fly tolerance is not absolute: you will always see some damage.
The breeder Tozer Seeds from England therefore advises as follows:
Always plant a susceptible variety next to Flyaway and/or Resistafly: the flies will then settle on the susceptible variety. The tolerance is based on a substance in the carrot peel that the fly finds repellent.
We have sown various trials with different varieties: the damage in Flyaway/Resistafly was always less than in susceptible varieties, although susceptible varieties were always sown in these trials as well => the flies then prefer to settle on the susceptible varieties. Very extreme differences were observed, where the susceptible varieties were actually inedible, and the Flyaway/Resistafly showed only slight damage.
