This is the oldest known orange carrot, and it's likely where it all began... White, yellow, and brown-purple carrots were already known in the 16th century, and orange carrots sometimes appeared coincidentally as a mutant, but the Netherlands is most likely the birthplace of the (cultivable) orange carrot, starting with this 'Vroege Hoornse' (Early Hoorn), as its name is derived from Hoorn. This carrot was taken by emigrants to the US, leading to the emergence of many orange carrots in both Europe and the New World. We estimate that this old variety originated around 1600: during the 80-year war, the color orange meant a great deal to the royalists!
The nice thing about this old variety is that it can still hold its own: it's early harvestable (so it can be sown late), deep orange, with a short root length, making it very suitable for heavy soil.
