This early watermelon is a good candidate for outdoor cultivation in the Netherlands. Due to its somewhat compact growth (you can even prune it when fruits appear), this historic variety is even suitable for growing in (large) pots.
'Golden Midget' originated from crosses between 'New Hampshire Midget' and 'Pumpkin Rind', has a yellow rind when ripe and pink-red flesh. It has been on the market since 1959 and was developed by Elwyn Meader and Albert Yeager at the University of New Hampshire.
Expect fruits weighing 1-1.5 kg and harvest them when they are yellow. At the end of the season, you can also harvest unripe fruits; they often ripen further, and an unripe watermelon is deliciously fresh in a salad!
