The name is not related to a Welsh origin, but comes from the (Old) German "Welsche", which can generally be translated as "foreign". This species may have reached Europe via Siberia, but a route via Italy is more likely. The oldest sources have been found in China (200 BC) and later in Japan (around the year 500). The plant remains green and harvestable for most winters: in very severe winters it dies back only to revive first thing in spring! This spring onion is also called coarse chives.
