Corkscrew Garlic 'Tehan'

  • Product number: 306337.1
  • Origin: Europe
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon

This garlic is said to come from the Czech Republic, perhaps bought at a market there. The large harvest is striking, and the taste is excellent with a firm spiciness.

How delicious can also be beautiful.... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in taste than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted all year round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully grown in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier), and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later naturally means a later harvest. Harvesting is not compulsory; garlic is winter-hardy and can simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in shops and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a cool room, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids on, for example, roses – worth a try!
