Spiral garlic 'Shatili'

  • Product number: 306327.1
  • Origin: Caucasus, Georgia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon subvar. Glazed Purple Stripe

The ability to produce seeds (albeit few) indicates that this garlic is close to its original form. Found at an altitude of 1450 m near Shatili in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. The rich flavour, which is of course even better raw than baked, is best enjoyed after January, when the short-lived varieties are gone and this type has just reached its richest flavour. Tip: mash a few cloves and mix it with a good table vinegar.

How delicious can also be beautiful.... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavour than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar glazed purple stripe
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook (Spiral Garlic)
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately after receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. When planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge above ground by February (or earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Planting later naturally means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can also remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the leaves as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. Indoors, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in roses, for example, worth a try!
