Spiral garlic 'Purple Colorado' / 'Colorado Purple'

  • Product number: 306299.1
  • Origin: North America, Argentina
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon

This garlic is said to originate from the private collection of a grower in Colorado (Rocky Ford), where it has been cultivated for decades and is highly valued in the kitchen. We also found this variety in Argentina. According to enthusiasts, the taste is very good with a hint of sweetness. The yield is better the warmer and drier the summer, with 7-10 cloves per bulb.

How delicious can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (thereby) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in taste than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook
Also: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Packaging

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are stocked in autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. When planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier), and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not obligatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the leaves as you sometimes see garlic in stores, and dry the bulbs in the sun. They can sometimes be stored for up to a year indoors! Cultivation is not difficult, but good tips can be found in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
