Serpent Garlic 'Ophio'

  • Product number: 306292.1
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar rocambole

A nice spicy garlic, whose official variety name has been lost. This "variety" is popular for its good yield and excellent taste: hot with an afterburn... Also enjoy the beautiful flowering and twisted flower stalks.

How delicious can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called "hardneck garlic" in English and is generally stronger in taste than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar rocambole
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted all year round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. Planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier), and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later will, of course, result in a later harvest. Harvesting is not compulsory; garlic is winter-hardy and can also simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores, and dry the bulbs in the sun. They can sometimes be stored for up to a year indoors! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
