Spiral garlic 'Oosterdel'

  • Product number: 306290.1
  • Origin: Europe, Lithuania
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar marbled purple stripe

This very tasty variety originally comes from Klaipėda, Lithuania. The bulb contains between 3 and 7 large cloves. For those who like it very hot with an early and a late "burn", and as a bonus, a surprising tingle (sparkling). The stems grow gracefully in a double (so-called pretzel-like) curl.

How delicious can also be beautiful.... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavour than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar marbled purple stripe
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately after receiving, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in the autumn, the garlic will emerge above ground by February (or even earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Later planting naturally means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a room, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
