Spiral garlic 'Maxatawny'

  • Product number: 306270.1
  • Origin: South Poland
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar rocambole

It is a rare variant of the German Red breed, originating from former Silesia (Southern Poland) and maintained for years in the U.S. by immigrants (Mennonites). The plants develop a long, initially curling flower stalk, in which small bulblets later grow. They are said to reach up to 1.80 meters in height (sometimes over 1 meter in the Netherlands). The bulb has 10 - 15 easy-to-peel cloves. The taste is full and mild.

How delicious can also be beautiful.... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stalk and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavour than the so-called softneck varieties.

Packaging

Garlic can be planted all year round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully grown in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier), and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a cool, dry place, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation guide in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids on roses, for example – worth a try!
