Corkscrew Garlic 'Kees'

  • Product number: 306265.1
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon

This garlic was developed by garlic expert Kees Huijbregts (Eemlook). We worked with him for years... He experimented with crossing garlic varieties. When Lambert Sijens (from Tuinen van Weldadigheid) took over Kees's garlic collection in 2018, it included 5 crosses. Of those experiments, the best one remained. It is a medium-sized beige-white hardneck garlic with brown cloves. As a tribute, Lambert named it 'Kees'. Both men are now independently continuing their beautiful cultivation work, and we have had the great pleasure of working together. We noticed that this garlic yielded a remarkably large harvest, even in the challenging growing year of 2024!

How delicious can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with one or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in taste than the so-called softneck varieties.

Packaging

Garlic can be planted all year round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are available in autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully grown in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later naturally means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a room, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Growing is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
