Garlic scapes 'DX 134'

  • Product number: 306253.1
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon

This Hardneck Garlic is one of many new varieties developed by the WRPIS (Western Regional Plant Introduction Station). The average yield is more than compensated by its deep, purple colour combined with an excellent flavour.

How delicious can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavour than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon
Dutch: Spiral garlic
Also: Aesculapium onion
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Packaging

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully grown in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a cool room, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids on roses, for example – worth a try!
