Spiral garlic 'Choparski'

  • Product number: 306251.1
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar marbled purple stripe

This Siberian variety is pleasantly hot and very aromatic when used raw; when cooked, the aromas and heat become somewhat milder.

How delicious can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This flavorful member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavor than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar marbled purple stripe
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted all year round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully grown in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later naturally means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is hardy and can also remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. Indoors, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Growing them is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation guide in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids on roses, for example – worth a try!
