Spiral garlic 'Bogatyr' / 'Moskow'

  • Product number: 306198.1
  • Origin: Eurasia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar marbled purple stripe

Many delicious varieties come from regions of the former USSR. We bought this variety under the name 'Moskow', according to the data a Glazed Purple Stripe type, but we have a very strong suspicion that this is the well-known 'Bogatyr'. This is a Marbled Purple Stripe type... For us, the very good yield and storability stood out. The taste is very pleasant: quite fiery, but quickly changing into a pleasant and mild aftertaste. Normally, a harvest of bulbs with 7-10 cloves. Due to the limited supply of medicine, this variety is called "Russian Penicillin" around Moscow!

How delicious can also be beautiful.... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in taste than the so-called softneck varieties.

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately after receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. When planted in autumn, the garlic will sprout in February (or earlier), and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can also remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores, and dry the bulbs in the sun. In a cool room, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but good tips can be found in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
