Spiral Garlic 'Bavarian Purple'

  • Product number: 306192.1
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar rocambole

A strongly flavored garlic with a beautiful purple-striped outer skin. Eat a clove raw and you will experience the complex taste: the heat builds up quickly, perhaps a tear in the eye, but disappears just as quickly without a hot aftertaste. The bulbs root very actively and are very winter-hardy; storage is (as is normal for a Rocambole-type) very good.

How tasty can also be beautiful... (or vice versa). This flavorful member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavor than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar rocambole
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted year-round, as long as the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock in autumn and winter. We stock varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately upon receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. When planted in the autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier) and can be harvested in June-July. Planted later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can also simply remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores and dry the bulbs in the sun. Indoors, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but good tips can be found in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
