Garlic chives 'Bai Pi Suan'

  • Product number: 306190.1
  • Origin: China, Xinjiang
  • Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar purple stripe

This Purple Stripe variety most likely originates from Xinjiang, China's most northwestern province. The taste is spot on: Bai Pi Suan has a full, rich flavour with a hint of herbs and a medium heat. The purple-tinged skin is easy to peel, and in fertile soil the bulbs can grow quite large!

How delicious can also be beautiful.... (or vice versa). This tasty member of the garlic family grows with 1 or more curls in the stem and is (therefore) particularly decorative. Spiral garlic is called hardneck garlic in English and is generally stronger in flavour than the so-called softneck varieties.

Names:
Latin: Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar purple stripe
Dutch: Spiraalknoflook (Spiral Garlic)
Also known as: Esculaapui
English: Serpent Garlic Hardneck

Garlic can be planted year-round, provided the cloves are in good condition. Most varieties are in stock during autumn and winter. We supply varieties that are successfully cultivated in the Netherlands. Immediately after receipt, break open the bulb and plant the cloves in the ground: 2-5 cm deep and 10-20 cm apart. If planted in the autumn, the garlic will emerge in February (or earlier), and they can be harvested in June-July. Planting later, of course, means a later harvest. Harvesting is not mandatory; garlic is winter-hardy and can also remain in the ground. After harvesting, braid the foliage as you sometimes see garlic in stores, and dry the bulbs in the sun. Indoors, they can sometimes be stored for up to a year! Cultivation is not difficult, but you can find good tips in our cultivation description in PDF (see bottom of the website). Garlic is said to deter aphids in, for example, roses – worth a try!
