White Utah Jumbo Onions

  • Product number: 305935
  • Origin: Central Asia
  • Latin: Allium cepa

These snow-white onions, inside and out, grow quite large (with proper care and fertile soil) and are also known as Sweet Spanish Onions due to their mild, slightly sweet taste. You can store the onions for several months, but start eating them right away, as you can harvest an onion at any stage. Of course, storage is only possible for mature onions, when the foliage starts to bend ("striking") and the bulbs are hung and dried with their leaves.

Calçots, those delicious young spring onions that Catalonia is famous for, are very easy to grow from these white onions. You sow them in August and space the plants 3-5 cm apart. In winter, protect the young plants from severe frost and mound a little soil around them. In spring, continue mounding (total 10-15 cm), and harvest them when they are 1-2 cm thick. You can find recipes online; the main thing is grilling them on the barbecue. You eat them by hand, just like herring here!
