Beefsteak Tomato 'President Garfield'

  • Product number: 295474
  • Origin: Central and South America
  • Latin: Lycopersicon lycopersicum, or also L. esculentum

This medium-sized, beautifully ribbed, red beefsteak tomato has a great flavour and dates back to around 1884, named after the 20th American president Garfield, who (after only 4 months of presidency) was shot dead on July 2, 1881. The Dane, who bred and named this variety, was apparently impressed by this global news…

Do you often grow your tomatoes in the same spot, for example in a greenhouse? Then diseases can develop in the soil, which rootstocks are resistant to, and grafting is therefore recommended:
for grafting tomatoes, use this variety: 291110 Tomato 'Landon'. As an aid, we recommend these grafting clips: 847520 Grafting clip 1.5 mm.

The largest tomatoes in our assortment are called beefsteak tomatoes. This tomato owes its name to the larger amount of flesh (instead of juice). This applies to most varieties in this group, with a few exceptions such as the so-called stuffing tomatoes.

Sowing method: Sow indoors March-May. Transplant into pots when 5 cm tall. Keep in a very bright location and harden off outdoors from April when the weather is good. Do not plant out before the end of May. Tomato plants use a lot of water. For this taller or (in the greenhouse) climbing type, the side shoots (suckers) must be removed regularly. Plant spacing 60-80 cm.
