Beefsteak Tomato 'Indigo Blue Beauty'

  • Product number: 295446
  • Origin: Central America
  • Latin: Lycopersicon lycopersicum, or also L. esculentum

This successful red and blue tomato was bred by Brad Gates and originated from a cross between 'Beauty King' and a blue tomato. The plants produce a good yield of medium-sized fruits (150-200 g). The taste is very good, and the blue color (caused by the healthy anthocyanin) develops more with increased sun exposure.

The largest tomatoes in our assortment are called beefsteak tomatoes. This name is due to the greater amount of flesh (instead of juice) in these tomatoes. This holds true for most varieties in this group, with a few exceptions such as the so-called stuffing tomatoes.

Names:
Latin: Lycopersicon lycopersicum, or also L. esculentum
Dutch: Vleestomaat (Beefsteak tomato)
Also: Indigo Blue Beauty
English: Tomato, Beefsteaks Type

Sowing method: Sow indoors from March to May. When seedlings are 5 cm tall, transplant them into pots. Provide plenty of light and, from April onwards, harden off outdoors in good weather. Do not plant outdoors before late May. Tomato plants require a lot of water. For this taller or (in a greenhouse) climbing type, side shoots (suckers) should be removed regularly. Planting distance 60-80 cm.
