This variety has become naturalized in Quebec (Canada) and thrives very well in northern countries. The round, pink-red fruits (150-170 g and 7 cm in diameter) do not burst easily, are harvestable early, and have a delicate aroma with plenty of sweet notes. The plants remain fairly compact (120 cm) and can also be grown very well in containers or large pots. Canabec was developed in 1975 by breeder Roger Doucet at the Saint-Hyacinthe Agricultural Research Station in Quebec.
This group of tomatoes is medium-sized, falling between cherry tomatoes and beefsteak tomatoes. Each one has a unique character. The climbing varieties ripen a bit later than the compact varieties and are therefore more successful under rain protection: a lean-to, greenhouse, or grow tunnel.
