Named after the Italian King Umberto (Humbert I), this variety may be of Italian origin. We suspect it was brought to the US by Italian immigrants as early as 1880 and was renamed around 1885. This small tomato has the typical elongated oval shape of a Roma tomato and is red in color. Ideal and very tasty for salads, juice, ketchup, and pizza, but also widely used for drying. In our climate, this robust variety also grows quite well outdoors, and the fruits can be stored for a long time after harvesting. In the greenhouse, the plants grow up to about 2 m.
Elongated, sweet tomatoes with a lot of flesh. In subtropical countries, this variety is used for processing into juices, soups, ketchup, dried tomatoes, etc. Tip: freeze Roma tomatoes with their skins on.
