In your exploration of edible plants, you certainly can't miss the world's largest sugar supplier: sugar cane. In the tropics, the plants grow up to 6 meters tall with stems 5 cm thick, full of sweetness! In our climate, due to its sensitivity to frost, cultivation is only possible in (large) pots. Outdoors in summer and indoors in autumn in a bright, not too warm place. After 1 year, an occasional thicker stem can be harvested: great for chewing, a natural candy!
Sugar cane originated in Indonesia and from there spread across tropical Asia. Alexander the Great brought the plant to Greece, amazed by this "reed that makes honey without bees"... Later, mainly the Arabs spread its cultivation, after which the Europeans brought it to Central and South America. Unfortunately, much slave labor was involved in the 17th-19th centuries.
