This tropical tree can be grown indoors as a potted plant and enjoys being outdoors in summer. Its sturdy, ficus-like leaves form the base from which the wonderfully fragrant, white flowers emerge. These flowers retain their scent for so long that they are also used in the perfume industry or dried in scented sachets... The small fruits, which resemble rose hips, are edible raw or processed: sweet and starchy with a soft mouthfeel. You can compare them to dates. The seeds are pressed into a very rich oil, and the essential oil from the bark is highly prized in perfumery... Finally, all parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine; consult books or the internet for more information.
