A historical Chard (Swiss Chard) variety that you grow for its continuously harvestable leaves. In English, this variety is called ‘Perpetual Spinach’, and in the 1970s, an organic gardening pioneer from Ekeren (B), Staf Storms, promoted this easy, tasty vegetable. Since then, this formidable flavour competitor to true spinach has been saved from oblivion in our Low Countries. During the English colonisation of India, this chard spread across that vast country and is grown there instead of spinach under the name Palak. Both there and here, cultivation is easier than spinach, the taste is slightly different, but at least as good!
