This is one of the reddest Cos lettuces we know. Fine in flavour, striking in colour, harvestable at every stage! The great thing about this red colour is the presence of more antioxidants: tasty and healthy!
Fortunately, Cos lettuce is getting a lot of attention again! We are discovering this crispy, slightly spicy lettuce as a delicious raw product. Cos lettuce is healthy and grows easily. In the past, the heads were tied together a few weeks before harvesting to make them more tender, hence the name. Nowadays, we are used to the taste and even appreciate a little bitterness in raw vegetables. In the past, this lettuce was even briefly cooked in the Netherlands, which is where it got its old nickname "stoofsla" (stew lettuce). The Romans already ate this lettuce, so it is truly a historic type!
