This Romaine lettuce is nicknamed Red Corn Salad by everyone who grows it. The young brownish-red lettuce grows with round leaves in a beautiful rosette and can be sown in autumn, just like real corn salad. A nice idea to mix with green corn salad! If allowed to grow longer, it forms the usual tender, tall heads of cos lettuce, red on the outside and increasingly paler on the inside.
Fortunately, cos lettuce is once again gaining a lot of attention! We are discovering this crispy, slightly spicy lettuce as a delicious raw product. Cos lettuce is healthy and grows easily. In the past, the heads were tied together a few weeks before harvest to make them more tender, hence the name. Nowadays, we are used to the taste and even appreciate a little bitterness in raw vegetables. In the past, this lettuce was even briefly cooked in the Netherlands, hence its old nickname "stew lettuce." The Romans already ate this lettuce, making it a truly historical type!
