ORGANICALLY GROWN SEEDS! A typically French historical variety (1883 Vilmorin) but still popular, especially now that ornamental vegetable gardens are all the rage. This variety tolerates hot summers well, has beautiful deeply serrated leaves, and is dark green in colour.
France is the birthplace of this crisp lettuce, originating around 1850. Batavia lettuce is generally considered the forerunner of Iceberg lettuce, which travelled from the US to Europe with American soldiers from around 1950 onwards.
