A typical French historical variety (1883 Vilmorin) but still popular, especially now that ornamental vegetable gardens are all the rage. This variety is heat-tolerant, has beautifully deeply cut leaves and is dark green in colour.
France is the birthplace of this crisp lettuce, which originated around 1850. Batavia lettuce is generally considered the precursor to Iceberg lettuce, which travelled from the US to Europe with American soldiers from about 1950 onwards.
