Shiny, firm, curly leaves, which slowly form a head and are reddish-brown towards the outside. Batavia lettuce is the (French) predecessor of American Iceberg lettuce. Grenobloise is very suitable for summer cultivation.
France is the birthplace of this crisp lettuce, developed around 1850. Batavia lettuce is generally seen as the forerunner of Iceberg lettuce, which traveled from the US to Europe with American soldiers from about 1950 onwards.
