While blonde may not always have the right image, this crunchy lettuce proves the opposite once and for all! The bright, light green, bumpy, firm yet tender lettuce forms an Iceberg-like head when fully grown. Incidentally, this Batavia lettuce can (of course) be eaten at any stage and is also very popular as a loose-leaf lettuce. The soil can be covered with mulch for better moisture retention during dry weather.
France is the birthplace of this crispy lettuce, originating around 1850. Batavia lettuce is generally considered the precursor to Iceberg lettuce, which travelled from the USA to Europe with American soldiers from about 1950 onwards.
