This is a mildew-resistant gardener's selection of this very old (originally Belgian) variety. During wet summers, you'll be glad you chose this variety... White-fleshed, smooth, thick roots with a black-brown skin. Due to the long roots, the soil needs to be deeply loosened. Cleaning is best done with gardening gloves, as they stain black, which is why they were once called "kitchen maid's sorrow".
The taste more than makes up for it: wonderfully soft and asparagus-like.
